About the collection

The Laika Karabey collection consists of 7,998 works. Laika Karabey (1909-1989) was a traditional Turkish music singer and composer. The collection includes concert programs, postcards, lecture notes, power of attorney documents, reviews about colleagues such as the composers Rahmi Bey and Nurettin Selçuk, photos of her students and friends, and the 48 photos she took while giving a concert, her TRT and press card, texts of her speeches, her resume, her article entitled “Music in Turkish History”, lyrics and compositions gifted to her, paintings and foils of Turkish composers, and her compositions such as “Ölmek kaderde var yaşayıp köhnemek lazım” and “Sevdim seni ruhum gibi ey sevgili yarim”.

The Laika Karabey collection also includes works of Turkish literature from writers such as Namık Kemal, Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem, and Cenab Şehabettin who wrote lyrics for her.

In 1948 Laika Karabey published the Music Journal with Hüseyin Sadrettin Arel who was also a composer. She has works of Hüseyin Sadrettin Arel in her collection. There are music notebooks of Arel, traditional dance music of various regions, "Player Girl", and "Song" works. The collection includes works by pianists such as Mozart, Beethoven, Frederic and Chopin.
