About the collection

Muallim Cevdet (1883-1935) was a librarian and the founder of Turkish archiving. The collection consists of 47 edicts, warrants and foundation charters.

The collection includes topics such as the genealogy from Adam to Mahmud II, diplomas, exemplary writing patterns for calligraphy, agendas (the notebook in which daily events are written), an edict for granting privileges to translators working at the French consulate, genealogy of Nakşibendiye, foundation charters about provinces such as Amasya, Bursa, Tokat, as well as border maps of Greece.

Muallim Cevdet defended the value and importance of documents throughout his life. When he heard that 400 boxes of documents in the Treasury Department of Istanbul Revenue Office had been sold to Bulgaria he intended to stop the sale by writing to both İsmet İnönü, the Turkish Historical Society, and the Bulgarian Turkish Association. Sadly, of the 200 bales of outgoing documents he was only able to have 51 sacks retrieved.
