About the collection

Atatürk Library collection includes 92,312 postcards. Postcards are a form of visual communication that can convey historical, political, and cultural events and social changes. They are of a documentary nature and allow for comparisons to be made between the past and the present, in order to witness the changing and developing social life, cities, historical buildings, streets and houses.

The collection of postcards, which spans a history of over 100 years, has hundreds of authors such as Marx Mruchterman, Bon Marche, E. F. Rochat, Jacques Ludwisohn, Römmler- Jonas, Mourdian, Osman Nuri, and A. Faik. For example, the postcards curated by Max Fruchtermann include tombs, mosques, fountains, and views of cities such as Istanbul and Bursa.

The presence of professionals such as barbers, nurses, teachers, and children in these historic landscapes indicates the social structure, culture and clothing style of the period. Each postcard contains countless clues, from the clothes on the people depicted, to the writings on the postcards, that communicate information from the past to the present. The postcards in the collection also cover subjects such as occupations, portraits, routes, residences, social-daily life, and transportation.

The Atatürk Library's postcard collection is the largest of its kind in Turkey, with 63, 000 postcards added to the collection through purchase. There are plans to digitized and make accessible this collection.
