Designed in line with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s vision to redefine the traditional library model by establishing next-generation libraries that serve as both knowledge centers and cultural hubs, the Gülten Akın Library is named after one of Turkey’s most important women poets, Gülten Akın, known for her works on social issues, poverty, isolation, and the stories of strong women.

The library opened on March 29, 2022, in the Kıraç Şehitler Neighborhood of Esenyurt and covers an area of 600 square meters with a seating capacity of 220.

Its rich collection of 13,372 books includes a broad range of subjects such as history, literature, political science, philosophy, research and analysis, art, informatics, technology, science, religion, personal development, cultural heritage, architecture and design, children’s literature, and periodicals.

Committed to the principle of “No district shall be left without access to culture, arts, or books,” this library aims to bring new vitality to underserved and overlooked neighborhoods—especially by reaching children and young people in these areas.

The library hosts a wide variety of events and workshops, including:

• Literature, theater, painting, music, and arts workshops

• Educational activities for children

• Supportive seminars for parents

• Study and exam prep programs

• Creative writing, cartooning, illustration, screenwriting, and IT workshops

It also offers ample study spaces for local students preparing for exams or working on their school assignments.

All residents of the area, as well as those across Istanbul, can benefit from the borrowing services at Gülten Akın Library and other libraries affiliated with the Library and Museums Branch Directorate under the Department of City History and Promotion of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
