Restored by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the Bebek Cistern was reopened to Istanbulites as an exhibition and art venue on September 29, 2021.
From the mid-19th century to the end of the 20th century, the Bebek Cistern served various purposes including being a picnic area, water supply point, waterway, fishing, and gardening site, making it a unique place among Istanbul's historic cisterns. While similar structures from the Byzantine or Ottoman periods can be found in many parts of Istanbul, this cistern—named after the neighborhood it is located in—remained neglected for many years.
With its comprehensive restoration, the Bebek Cistern has once again connected with the city and its residents through the transformative power of art. Today, as it continues to host exhibitions and cultural events, the venue brings together Istanbul’s historical heritage and contemporary art.
The Bebek Cistern Gallery is open every day except Monday.
