Breathing new life into Istanbul’s historical and cultural heritage, the Haliç Shipyard reopened in 2024 as the "Istanbul Art Museum" following a comprehensive restoration and adaptive reuse led by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
Originally established as the naval heart of the Ottoman Empire by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1455, Haliç Shipyard (a surviving part of the legendary Tersâne-i Âmire) holds the distinction of being one of the world’s oldest shipyards still in operation, with nearly 600 years of continuous activity. Over time, this vast complex—an enduring symbol of Ottoman naval power—grew to encompass docks, pools, slipways, barracks, divan halls, mosques, workshops, and more, securing its place as a pivotal center in maritime history.
Today, functioning as the Istanbul Art Museum, this historic structure hosts museum exhibitions, a performing arts center, children’s workshop spaces, and social areas. Complemented by its restaurants and event venues, the complex offers a truly special experience for lovers of both history and art.
Not just a showcase for maritime heritage, the center serves as a major gathering place for Istanbul’s cultural and artistic life, hosting diverse exhibitions—including the Tavillioğlu Collection—for art enthusiasts to enjoy.
